JOSIAH SMITH TENNENT HOUSE c.1859

-
This house was the last great antebellum mansion built in Charleston SC on land formerly owned by Henry Laurens, one of the great figures of the colonial period. Although the house had a more modest interior than earlier mansions, it is original in design and its gracious West Indian roof line is considered unique in Charleston. It survived the 1886 earthquake but was severely damaged by multiple uses and years of virtual abandonment. Using the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties Liollio led in the preservation, renovation and repurposing of this beautiful structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first floor was repurposed as a daycare center; the second floor as meeting, community and education spaces; and the third floor provides professional and administrative offices. Scope included: preservation, retrofitting, restoration, and critical masonry repairs to the structure and historical gardens.
