Hitting the Road to the Upstate!

Mez Joseph

Jennifer and Elissa hit the road for a day trip to the upstate today to visit the Fort Mill Welcome Center!  We are looking forward to moving into the Design Development phase of the Fort Mill Welcome Center Replacement project in March!  We also found a great little lunch spot called the Flipside Cafe…..check it out next time you are in Fort Mill.  Don't let the sunny photos fool you…..it was cold out there!

Fat Tuesday Supper Club

Mez Joseph

Thanks to the Associates and Associate Principals for putting together a Fat Tuesday Supper Club at Andy's house last night! The menu included deconstructed muffulettas, jalapeno poppers,  mardi gras themed salads, Andy's famous jambalaya, several homemade desserts and a King Cake (obviously, can't have a Fat Tuesday celebration without one!). There were definitely enough beads to go around!  Hope everyone had a fun Fat Tuesday!

Outside Our Window

Mez Joseph

This time the focus outside our window is in the air!  We caught a glimpse of five military helicopters flying over the city.  If they were navy helicopters....we believe they were SH60B Seahawks.  Dustin Seagar, one of our in house navy veterans, served two deployments to the Persian Gulf as an electronic warfare technician on board the USS Peleliu.

On Saturday, Liollio picked up trash along Maybank Highway and the Gelegotis Bridge for Adopt a Highway.  Pictured in the 37 degree temperature are Geoff Mohney, Dan Corte and Cherie Liollio. Rick Bousquet and Dinos Liollio are in one of the orange bags... Oops😄

Bells Elementary Pin Up

Mez Joseph

Andy and Alison have been working hard on the schematic design of Bells Elementary school.  They presented the current design to the office before lunch today to get feedback as they move toward their schematic design submittal in the coming weeks.  This is a new 45,000 sq ft elementary school in Colleton County.  We look forward to see this project develop!

Mardi Gras King Cake

Mez Joseph

Andy, as a Louisiana native, brought in a Louisiana-style King Cake today for the office!  The cake is Zulu flavored (chocolate and coconut) named after the famous Zulu parade that is known for their decorative coconuts thrown from the floats.

Walter Hood Lecture

Mez Joseph

The AIA + CACC hosted a great lecture last night by Walter Hood at the Visitor Center auditorium.  Several Liollio folks met up with the landscape architects at Stantec for a quick happy hour before the lecture!  Walter Hood is a landscape architect out of Oakland, California.  Check out his firm, Hood Design, and their work.

The next lecture will be on April Fools Day by John Patkau, FAIA from Vancouver.  It is free and open to the public, so mark your calendars!

AIA SC Board Meeting + Legislative Reception in Columbia

Mez Joseph

Andy Clark attended the AIA SC Board meeting in Columbia.  Following the board meeting, he attended the annual Design & Construction Partnership Legislative Reception, which had one of the biggest crowds ever! This year members of Carolinas AGC joined the engineers & AIASC at the Palmetto Club in Columbia on Tuesday evening. It was a very successful event that highlighted for the many legislators and constitutional officers that attended several key issues that members of the AEC industry in South Carolina will be focusing on for the 2015-2016 legislative session.

CHARLESTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WINS AWARD FOR ITS APRON CONSTRUCTION IN 2013

Mez Joseph

Congratulations to our friends at the Charleston Airport Authority, ADC Engineering & McCarthy Improvement Company for their talent, vision, dedication & commitment to quality! Liollio Architecture is honored to be part of this important project. Read The Post & Courier article here.

“This project was complicated because the airport remained operational at all times during construction, which occurred 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” said Greg Jones, a partner in ADC Engineering.

“The contractor was extremely cooperative and attentive to schedules and quality,” Jones said. “The airport staff was diligent in the supervision of airport users and the design team worked hand-in-hand with the contractor to methodically complete the project. These efforts resulted in a high-quality concrete apron, delivered on time, under budget and with no compromise to operations or safety.”

Solar Decathlon Project at Clemson!

Mez Joseph

Associate Andy Clark traveled to Clemson at the end of last week for the CAF board meetings.  While he was there he attended a presentation by 2015 solar decathlon team, Indigo Pine. Learn more about the project and keep up with the progress on their website.

The solar decathlon is a multi-disciplinary applied research project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. This year the competition will take place October 8th-18th in Irvine, California. Clemson is 1 of 17 university lead teams that design, build and operate the competition's solar powered houses.

AIA Young Architects Roundtable

Mez Joseph

AIA Charleston kicked off 2015 with a roundtable discussion from a panel of Young Architects. This meeting was held as a follow up to the November meeting in which we heard from a distinguished panel of past presidents, including Dinos Liollio. As we begin a new year, we look forward to discussing current & future issues facing the profession. Liollio's Alison Dawson served on the panel, participating in a great discussion this afternoon at the Charleston Maritime Center.
