Elissa and Dan returned to the office enegerized to push the welcome center designs forward after our site visits!  We took over one of the conference rooms to have a morning design charrette.

Welcome Center Site Visits

Jennifer, Dan and Elissa have covered the state over the past two days visiting the Fort Mill and Hardeeville State Welcome Centers.  The weather was fantastic for spending some time outside!   We enjoyed having our meetings underneath the picnic shelters on site!

AIA Gaillard Tour

The AIA headed out to the Gaillard Center yesterday afternoon for a tour of the building as they are wrapping up construction.  Thanks to Skanska for leading the tour.  Here is a brief description of the building:

The Gaillard Center is a 1960’s era, general purpose auditorium and exhibit hall.  The design team, David M. Schwarz Architects, Inc. in collaboration with Earl Swensson Associates, Inc. and local architects Evans & Schmidt, were commissioned in 2010 to design an extensive renovation and expansion of the facility.  The project scope includes rebuilding the auditorium, expanding the exhibit hall into a banquet facility, and the construction of an office building that will accommodate several of the City’s departmental offices.  The exterior includes new entrance porticos on two sides and a galleria promenade running the width of the building between the two porticos to serve as a shared lobby for the performance hall, banquet hall and offices.

New gates, new look, great passenger experience | CHS

It’s been 18 months in the making. On Tuesday, April 14, Charleston International Airport will open its new addition to Concourse B.

Passengers flying American Airlines and US Airways will be among the first to experience the new boarding lounge, which is open and bright because of expansive floor- to-ceiling windows and a 6-foot clerestory that lets in light from above. The white décor – from the terrazzo floors to powered bar- and banquette-style seating – gives the room a fresh, open feel that passengers will enjoy as they wait to board their flights.

“We’re really excited to be opening the Concourse B extension. It is very different from what our passengers have been used to and we think they are really going to love it,” said Paul G. Campbell, Jr., director of airports for the Charleston County Aviation Authority.

The Concourse B extension adds 16,300 square feet of space and five gates to the airport footprint. There’s an additional 16,300 square feet underneath the concourse for airline offices.

In the coming weeks, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines will move into the new addition. The old portion of Concourse B will be renovated and renovation will start on Concourse A.  When the terminal redevelopment is complete at the end of 2015, CHS will have a total of 15 airline gates to serve a growing number of fliers. In 2014, CHS set an all-time record of 3.1 million passengers.

In a few weeks, DeSano Pizza Bakery, which has a downtown Charleston location, will open in the Concourse B addition. It will be the first of the airport’s new food and beverage concessions to open as part of the $189 million Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program (TRIP). New, larger restrooms have also been added.

“The renovation of the concourses and boarding lounges is going to transform the passenger experience at Charleston International,” Campbell said. “It’s going to be a great place to relax, shop, dine or do some work as passengers wait to board their flights.”

CHS provides passengers with access to 17 cities and 22 airports in the U.S. and Canada.  Airlines providing service from Charleston are Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways, American Airlines, US Airways, Silver Airways and Porter Airlines.

Liollio's Elissa Bostain Passes Final ARE Exam

Liollio Architecture is pleased to announce that Elissa Bostain, Associate AIA, has passed her last ARE exam! Congratulations Elissa! We are all very excited for you.

AIA Mentor Dinner at Vanderhorst Plantation

Alison and Elissa enjoyed a fantastic Charleston evening out at Vanderhorst Plantation for the AIA Mentor DInner with Scott Parker of Design Works, and Glenn Keyes, FAIA of Glenn Keyes Architects.  Scott gave the group a tour of the main house while dinner was being prepared.  Check out this article to find out more information on the "modern fish camp" where we enjoyed dinner over the marsh!

John Patkau Lecture

Last night AIA + Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston sponsored a great lecture by John Patkau at the Visitor Center! Patkau Architects is based in Vancouver, Canada.  He and his wife started the firm over 30 years ago.   Several Liollio folks enjoyed a fun dinner at 39 Rue De Jean following the lecture.

Liollio Awarded Two 2015 AIA SC Design Awards

The AIA South Carolina Design Awards Program was established to recognize projects that exemplify the very best in architecture in our state. By highlighting these projects in this way, the value of architectural design is elevated and promoted throughout the state. The 2015 AIA South Carolina Design Awards was held in Greenville last Friday and Liollio walked away with two honors.

Charleston Progressive Academy was awarded a Renovation/Adaptive Re-Use Merit Award.

Jury comments:

• The courtyard is the whole story – an inspired response to a corner lot by creating a contained activity space surrounded by buildings full of light and energy.
• The character of the original portion of the building is obviously respected here – and improved to meet current requirements.
• The new elements are respectful to the original – the framing of the original entrance helps remind the neighborhood of their special school building.
• It is obviously well-loved.

St. Helena Library at Penn Center was awarded an Interior Architecture Honor Award.

Jury comments:

• Ohhh – this is the one!!!!
• Great community meeting space.
• This is a beautiful project - far and away the best interiors project! 

Dinos Liollio Attends Leadership Circle Briefing

On Thursday, March 26, 2015, Dinos Liollio attended the Chamber’s Leadership Briefing at Hall’s Chop House. Mayor Joseph P. Riley presented a variety of priority projects, focusing on the proposed African-American Museum being design by the Harry Cobb, Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners Architects of New York City. His passion and commitment was infusing and his presentation of the design insightful.

City Approves + Liollio to Design New West Ashley Senior Center

Dinos and Cherie Liollio attended the Charleston City Council meeting March 24, 2015, at which time Council approved the contract with Liollio Architecture to proceed with the design of the new $8-$10 million new Senior Center to be located West of the Ashley near  Roper-St. Francis Hospital.
