OLD CITY JAIL AWARDED HISTORIC CHARLESTON FOUNDATION'S 2024 WHITELAW FOUNDERS AWARD

Mez Joseph

The Old City Jail at 21 Magazine Street served as the county jail from its construction in 1802 until 1939 and was home to a variety of infamous inmates. Historic fabric and finishes were maintained wherever possible but there are challenges to retrofitting a jail for modern use. The new office suites have exposed brick walls, 14 to 16-foot ceilings, metal bars on the windows, and bars on some interior doors. Historic Charleston Foundation honored Old City Jail, LLC with a 2024 Whitelaw Founders Award for the rehabilitation and excellent stewardship of the Old City Jail. Liollio Architecture congratulates Old City Jail, LLC and our team on this amazing achievement. We’re honored to have been part of the team for the preservation and repurposing of this important and historic Charleston landmark. Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients!

ACE PROGRAM STUDENTS VISIT LIOLLIO

Mez Joseph

Liollio Architecture hosted students and mentors from the St. John’s High School ACE Program at our office on Tuesday. The students spent the morning getting a first-hand look into the day to day workings of an architecture office. They participated in a project-based learning exercise that guided them through sketching three dimensional objects in plan, section and elevation. They then continued work on their semester project to design a new wrestling facility for their school. Thank you to everyone involved for it a fun and memorable day!

2016 Library Journal Fall Design Institute

Mez Joseph

Angie Brose and Jennifer Charzewski represented Liollio Architecture at the 2016 Fall Design Institute hosted by Library Journal in Charleston SC. This semi-annual event provides an opportunity for public and academic librarians and staff to come together and “start planning the library of the future today.”  The group of about 100 toured 21st century facilities, discussed opportunities for renovating and retrofitting spaces large and small as well as planning for future projects, and explored the real-life design challenges faced by libraries through workshops and “speed sessions.” Liollio Architecture and Margaret Sullivan Studio worked with Dorchester County Public Library to provide an interactive workshop session related to activity-based programming for 21st century library services based on community needs. We may be biased, but we think we had the most creative groups and the outcomes were truly inspiring!  We also enjoyed getting to know our great architectural colleagues from across the country who love library design as much as we do!
