IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT STRANGERS

Mez Joseph

Each and every day is unique and special when we make it that way.
— The Liberators International

Winter Monday morning blues instantly dissolved in Perth, Australia as an entire carriage of passengers spontaneously joined in singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow on their way to work.

Peter, the founder of the social movement enters the 7:51am express train to Perth and starts off by contributing a beautifully uplifting message. The intent behind this was to allow people to feel recognised for the work they do and to demonstrate how simple it can be to uplift each other when we come together through positive shared experience. It can be easy to feel unappreciated, disconnected and isolated from our community in a world that constantly desires exponential growth, busy-ness and expansion. Thankfully, we’ve discovered our shared humanity exists just cm’s beneath the surface of a seemingly ghost like public places. We decided to create this moment as a humanitarian check-point; a brief moment in time to see that beyond our differences there is love and humanity.

What happens next is quite incredible to say the least. Pete hands out the lyrics to the song whilst a young Ukulele player brings out a vintage uke and starts to hum out an angelic version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Within seconds other members of the public decide to join in on this outpouring of community joy.

“We had a few of the Liberators help get the ball rolling, however more than 60% of the passengers who sung along were complete strangers. We sung the entire song, progressively gaining confidence and participants as we went. When we finished an uproar of positive emotion, claps, cheers and smiles came streaming from the people.” Said Michelle, one of the Liberators who helped in the morning.

The Liberators are no strangers to these public participatory experiences having created multiple examples of freedom & human connection in Perth including the Perth Train Party which gained more than 40 million views online. The Liberators create these moments for the world to no longer be fearful of respectful self-expression in public. We expose an element of our own vulnerability as a way to give strength to those who are unable to do so yet. This is where the idea of Liberation comes in to the picture.

The next step for this Perth-based international social movement is taking their concepts of love and human connection through 5 capital cities in Europe to see if these acts of spontaneous joy are universally well received or if it’s just in Perth. Assist the Liberators in sharing the love to a global audience by supporting their crowdfunding campaign at www.pozi.be/liberatorstoeurope.

Matilda F. Dunston Elementary Dedication Ceremony

Mez Joseph

This building is the future. It’s the future for our children, it’s the future for our community and for our parents.
— Cheryl Savage, Matilda F. Dunston Elementary Principal

A dedication ceremony took place on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 for the new Matilda F. Dunston Elementary School. The school’s new campus is located at the same site as the former building on Remount Road in North Charleston. The school opened back in August, but Wednesday was the first time staff and students were able to showcase the new state-of-the-art building to the community. Some of the elementary school’s new features include larger classrooms, two computer labs, and a media room.

The principal of Matilda F. Dunston Elementary, Cheryl Savage, says staff always wanted a bigger campus for the students. “This building is the future. It’s the future for our children, it’s the future for our community and for our parents. We can now have a lot more events here,” Savage said. “We can have community members come in and do more with our children.”

She says none of this would be possible without the help from staff and parents. “We are growing every day with our numbers. We have children that are moving into this area I think because they want to come to Dunston,” Savage said. “We have a good reputation for how much we care about our children…we really love our children and we want them here.”

City of North Charleston Mayor, Keith Summey, and Charleston County School District Superintendent, Gerrita Postlewait, spoke at Wednesday’s dedication ceremony alongside other elected officials and school faculty.

Matilda F. Dunston Elementary Celebrates New Building with Dedication Ceremony - Live 5 News Coverage

By Lillian Donahue | December 18, 2019

After four years of planning and construction, the Charleston County School District is holding a dedication ceremony for the new Matilda F. Dunston Elementary school building Wednesday.

The new 77,000 square-foot building brings more space for students.

It also includes two computer labs so students can use computers while others may be testing.

Principal Cheryl Savage said she's excited for how the space can be utilized in new ways.

"This building is the future,” Savage said. “It's the future for the community and for our parents. We can now have a lot more events here. We can have community members come in and do a lot more with our children."

This year the school is housing Kindergarten through 4th grade. Next year, those students will make up the 5th-grade class.

During construction, Savage said the project would not have been completed so smoothly without the patience of teachers and staff.

"They never complained when there was something that wasn't working in their classroom because it wasn't ready or it wasn't put in their classroom yet,” Savage said. “they work so hard for the children and everybody here is like family and I think the staff is what makes this school what it is."

Around 100 community members and city leaders are expected at Wednesday’s dedication ceremony at 10 a.m.

2019 Charleston Reindeer Run

Mez Joseph

Liollio team members, Aaron Bowman and David Herrero recently participated in Charleston’s 2019 Reindeer Run. Presented by Half-Moon Outfitters, the annual Reindeer Run is a family-oriented, pet-friendly 5k run/walk through the lower peninsula of downtown Charleston SC. The event has grown significantly over the years; from only a few hundred participants to record attendance of over 3,500 runners.

Throughout the history of the event, the Charitable Society of Charleston (CSC) has donated over $1M to MUSC Children’s Hospital. Proceeds from the Reindeer Run are split between the campaign for the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and the Charitable Society of Charleston endowment. This endowment provides grants and donations to local non-profit organizations which benefit both children and elderly residents of the Lowcountry.

2019 Trident United Way Day of Caring

Mez Joseph

The 19th Annual Trident United Way Day of Caring is the largest single day of community service in the area. Trident United Way matches nonprofit agencies and schools with volunteer teams that help advance their mission and build capacity — all while fostering community engagement. Additionally, this day serves as a catalyst for year-round volunteer engagement as teams see the impact they can make in one day when they build partnerships within the community.

A group of Liollio volunteers joined thousands of volunteers from companies across the Tri-County to make the 2019 Day of Caring one to remember. More than 5,500 participants from 139 companies completed approximately 264 projects at 152 sites.

James Island Town Hall - AIA Charleston Juror Comments

Mez Joseph

The lovely scale and cohesive materiality and great detailing contribute to this beautiful project. It definitely contributes the right character to the corner it occupies. The strong simplicity of this project conveys a clear sense of welcoming stability for the community. The single shutter and stacked window composition was a delightful and playful reference to history; the familiarity of vernacular indicates comfort for the community and individual user regardless of its public forum.

Richland Library St. Andrews - AIA Charleston Juror Comments

From a sustainability standpoint, this project made great use of modest shell. The jury appreciated the use of natural daylight and integration of landscape. The design incorporates smart and simple moves that transformed the previous building, creating an engaging and inviting solution.

Hampton Health Clinic - AIA Charleston Juror Comments

Mez Joseph

We hope that this building sets a trend for the neighborhood. It definitely makes the most of the site and we appreciate the circulation, daylight and overall plan of this modest building. The exterior detailing also makes the most of the material palette and budget. We appreciated the strength conveyed by the design, creating a sense of safety and comfort.

SCPRT Fort Mill Welcome Center - AIA Charleston Juror Comments

Mez Joseph

The plan of this center organized a tricky access problem, and balanced the need to have a front door presence with the nighttime access in a way that we thought was very hospitable. The exterior materials were wonderfully varied and had a compelling origin story. The roofline, daylight and detailing illustrated craft and care....and the porch swing looks like just the ticket! We appreciated the subtlety of the steel detailing as well as the spacious uplifting feel of the interior.

SPOTLIGHT ON: JOSHUA PUTNAM

Mez Joseph

Liollio is pleased to welcome Joshua Putnam to our design studio! A native of North Carolina, Joshua completed his Bachelor of Architecture and his Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture at North Carolina State University. He also studied Industrial Drafting & Design at Appalachian State University. Prior to joining Liollio, Joshua worked as a Project Designer with Craig Dean Architecture in Raleigh NC and a Maker with ZigZibit in Durham NC. After giving Joshua time to settle in, we sat down for a little Q&A with our newest Spotlight On feature.

How long have you lived in Charleston?
I recently moved here in April, so, 7 months or so.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town called Dallas in North Carolina.

What is your favorite inanimate thing in your home?
Hmmm, headlamp maybe? Toolbox?

What do you like to do when you have free time?
Build things, hike around in the woods, play with the pooches. Oh, and cook.

Do you have any pets? If so, tell us a bit about them.
I do. I have a 10 year-old boxer that has been with me all of her life. Her name is Manysteps Crazypaw, but I call her Zo’Dog for short. She is a seventh-generation dog whose lineage started with my grandparent’s boxers, Dutch and Dutchess. She is quite the animated character, and I couldn’t imagine what it would be like without her.

What architect or architecture firm most influenced you as a student?
Let’s see. I have always enjoyed reading the commentary and theory of Rem Koolhaas. His perspective can create aggressive dialogue, which is fun to think about. I am also a big fan of folks like Shim Sutcliffe, Lake Flato, Diller + Scofidio (and now Renfro), Mockbee, Murcutt, Williams Tsien, Frank Harmon, Wes Jones, and of course, Zumthor.

What is your favorite place you have traveled to and why?
I’ve been lucky enough to travel a good bit of places, and am also just getting started. It’s hard to say a favorite. Austrian Alps? Streets of Istanbul? Jungles of Costa Rica? Vineyards of Chianti? High deserts in Sierra Nevadas? And all the street food in-between?

What is your favorite thing about working at Liollio?
Office culture here is awesome. It’s challenging, a good comradery, and we all push one another to better ourselves and our cause. The diversity of projects keeps things fresh and challenging.

What inspires you most?
Art, folklore, & history

What style of architecture most impresses you or is your favorite?
Critical Regionalism. Lots to be learned here.

What is your favorite restaurant?
At the moment, my favorite restaurant is Bertha’s Kitchen in Charleston.

What’s your favorite place in Charleston?
I’m still discovering the town, but Hampton Park is beautiful. I’m drawn to the graveyards and cemeteries here and enjoy spending time walking through them. I spend a lot of time in the marshes in my backyard.

What is your favorite food?
Olives. I’m pretty sure I could eat my body weight of these.

What is your least favorite food?
Marshmallows

Do you play any instruments?
Not really. I’ve been known to draw on a harp (harmonica) every now and again. It’s one of those things that the more you drink the better I sound.

Who is your favorite musical artist or genre?
A bit of a loaded question, and too many good ones out there. Changes with the seasons.

Who is your favorite artist? I have many, but always enjoy Jeremy Fish. Lucky enough to have a few pieces of his artwork. My buddy Corey Mason is doing some cool work. I am a big fan.

Favorite television show?
No TV = no shows.

Last book you read?
Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki

Do you have a favorite book or author?
Isaac Asimov

Last movie you watched?
The new Lion King

Favorite movie or genre?
Apocalypto. This movie is badass. If you haven’t watched this movie, do yourself a favor and go watch it now.

Any random fact you could share with us?
I’ve taught primitive skills and technologies at various colleges and gatherings in the southeast.

Are you messy or organized?
I think I am a ‘tweener.

Do you have a favorite newspaper, blog or website?
Sure, www.fark.com. I guess it’s all three.

Favorite quote?
“Only do something twice, once.”

If your house was burning down, What is the one nonliving thing you would save?
Photos? Passport maybe?

Guilty pleasure?
Gas station hot dogs

What’s your astrological sign?
Capricorn. Although I read recently that they’ve had the signs wrong all this time, by design, and there are actually 13 of them. I was the last day of Capricorn, so I’m not sure which one comes next with the shift.

What is the proudest moment of your life, thus far?
Seeing family and friends succeed.

What is your personal philosophy?
Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

What is your greatest fear?
Heights. Picked a good profession, huh?

What does true leadership mean to you?
Empowering, teaching, and giving others the tools to succeed.

If you could do another job, what would it be?
I’ve thought about this, if I wasn’t a woodworker or architect, I’d be a butcher. Or it would be cool to be a blacksmith or a leatherworker.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I am on a quest to create a delicious charcuterie board – I’ve been curing meats and fermenting plants. Now it’s a waiting game.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Learn a trade.
