The Liollio team celebrated the beginning of summer by holding our first Liollio Field Day at Carr-Richardson Park in West Ashley. With fond memories of elementary school field days, usually held in May before summer break, we thought this would be a fun way to introduce play into a Friday workday. Field Day games were designed to improve overall health, strengthen team building, and show our folks how much they’re appreciated. Games included a Macaroni & Marshmallow Building Challenge, Beach Ball Relay, Jumbo Jenga, Hula Hoop Relay, Water Balloon Toss, Hard Hat Cup Relay, and more. Everyone had a great time, and we look forward to doing it again next year!
Liollio Architecture is pleased to announce the elevation of Lance Eubanks, Liz Corr, and Sarah Glass to Associate. The Liollio team celebrates their accomplishments and looks forward to their continued leadership. Congratulations to our new Associates!
Lance Eubanks, AIA, LEED AP, a Mississippi native, earned a Bachelor of Architecture at Mississippi State University. Lance has worked on multiple project types, including Biomedical Research Centers, Federal and Municipal projects, Higher Education Learning Environments, and Healthcare Facilities – always drawing his inspiration from the people who occupy these buildings. He fosters an encouraging and collaborative environment on each of his project teams. Lance is a member of AIA South Carolina and an alumnus of the AIA Christopher Kelley Leadership Development program. Prior to joining Liollio, Lance worked as a Project Manager and Project Designer in Washington DC.
Liz Corr, AIA, GGP, is a native of Philadelphia, PA. She completed her undergraduate education at Shippensburg University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics before completing her Master of Architecture at Clemson University. Liz’s professional experience includes projects in the Community, K12, Higher Education, and Federal markets. Her passion lies in education, library, and other community-centered design, where she believes architecture can have the most influential and positive impact. Liz is a member of AIA South Carolina, a board member with the Charleston Chapter of the ACE Mentor Program of America, and an Aqua Angel and regular volunteer with the Charleston Parks Conservancy.
Sarah Glass, AIA, a native of Charleston, received her Bachelor of Design in Architecture at the University of Florida and her Master of Architecture at Clemson University. She believes that the built environment has an incredible amount of influence on people’s lives. Sarah’s professional experience includes K12, Higher Education, Community, and Federal projects. She is the current AIA Charleston President, a past-chair of AIA SC’s Equity in Architecture Committee, and is involved with the Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston. Sarah is a studio leader, consistently bringing passion, confident direction, and expertise to the studio and on every phase of a project that she’s involved in.

Liollio Architecture is honored to announce that the American Institute of Architects has recognized Liollio’s design of the Hampton County Health Clinic in Varnville, SC with a 2020 AIA National Healthcare Design Award.

This facility serving two rural South Carolina communities reflects the region’s faith in its future. The new facility, a joint venture between county and state agencies, replaced an outdated, 50-year-old structure. Given the site’s location in a former railroad town, simple materials and massing were employed to evoke the boxcars that used to roll through. Inside, patient care areas are divided between clinical care and care for women, infants, and children. Each features its own service corridor and waiting areas, all with ample natural light that enhances the environment for patients facing potentially difficult diagnoses. Privacy was a key factor in determining the program and organization of the clinic’s spaces. At the new facility’s ribbon cutting ceremony, the team noted a shift in perception and mood, confirming it had delivered a modest but noble clinic reflective of the community’s emboldened spirit.

The Liollio team is proud to have participated in this year's virtual Water Mission Charleston Walk for Water. The virtual walk took place in multiple locations and participants united by a common purpose. Liollio team members, Aaron Bowman and David Herrero recently participated in Charleston’s 2019 Reindeer Run. Presented by Half-Moon Outfitters, the annual Reindeer Run is a family-oriented, pet-friendly 5k run/walk through the lower peninsula of downtown Charleston SC. The event has grown significantly over the years; from only a few hundred participants to record attendance of over 3,500 runners.
Throughout the history of the event, the Charitable Society of Charleston (CSC) has donated over $1M to MUSC Children’s Hospital. Proceeds from the Reindeer Run are split between the campaign for the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and the Charitable Society of Charleston endowment. This endowment provides grants and donations to local non-profit organizations which benefit both children and elderly residents of the Lowcountry.

The American Institute of Architects, SC Chapter announced the 2019 AIASC Design Chapter Awards on September 26 in Columbia SC. Liollio was honored with three awards; Honor Award in New Construction - James Island Town Hall, Merit Award in New Construction - Richland Library St. Andrews, and Citation Award in New Construction - An Outdoor Room: Department of Veterans Affairs.

The American Institute of Architects, South Carolina Chapter (AIASC) recently announced the 2019 recipients of the annual AIASC Design and Chapter Awards, which encourages and recognizes design excellence throughout South Carolina, and promotes public awareness of the role architects play in shaping the quality of life in their communities. Awards were presented on Thursday, September 26, 2019 in Columbia SC. This year’s design awards were given in New Construction, Residential Design, Adaptive Reuse, Historic Preservation and Interior Architecture to projects located in communities throughout the state.

The Community Collaboration Award – bestowed upon programs, institutions, or individuals who advance the public understanding and appreciation of design in the built environment, or for a project exhibiting exceptional engagement of the community in the design process.
The Patron Award – bestowed upon elected officials, public administrators, or community leaders who contribute to the development of laws, regulations, or policies that affect architecture, or the public’s perception of architecture, as an important part of our environment, life-style, and heritage.
The Social Justice Award – given to an individual or group that has demonstrated the power of a participatory design process to eliminate inequities in the built environment and for distinguished work embodying social responsibility to actively address relevant issues.

Liollio Health & Wellness Leader, Michael Edwards, was the featured speaker at the September Business in Your Backyard, a Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Presentation Series. Michael shared how the public-private partnership between the City of Charleston and Roper St. Francis Healthcare, paired with Liollio Architecture’s community engagement and design process, created the Louis Waring, Jr. Senior Center that serves as a hub, empowering Charleston’s senior community. Held in the newly opened facility on the campus of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley, guests heard from panelists who shared how the idea for the facility materialized and how it functions today. Panelists included former City of Charleston Council Member, Aubry Alexander, Director of Senior Services with Roper Healthcare, Elizabeth Bernat, and City of Charleston Department of Parks Project Manager, Beth Brownlee. Tours of the facility followed the presentation.

Liollio Architecture is pleased to announce the elevation of Michael Edwards, AIA, LEED AP to Associate Principal. Michael received his Master of Architecture and Bachelor in Design from Clemson University, where he also studied at the Clemson Architectural Center in Charleston and abroad at the Charles E. Daniel Center for Building and Urban Studies in Genoa, Italy.
For more than 21 years, Michael has had the privilege of designing health, community, commercial and residential projects. As Liollio’s Health & Wellness Leader, he is passionate about improving environments within our community. His current projects range from major medical center renovations and additions to the design of new medical offices, tenant upfits, urban infills, learning environments, hospice and palliative care, senior and adult day facilities, and veteran enrichments.
Michael believes that all architecture should enhance the human experience, and if designed thoughtfully, buildings can heal the spirit, improve health and impact the human psyche. “Early in my career, I experienced the power of design as my grandmother’s ten-year battle with Alzheimer’s led to her becoming one of the patients in my first hospice facility. Intimately involved in her daily care, I observed first-hand the impact of environment on her health as she shifted from nursing home to hospital to hospice facility. Those personal experiences have guided me in every design, fueling my passion for experiential and healing design in every project.”

Hampton Health Clinic in Varnville, SC received a New Construction/Substantial Renovation Honor Award. Brighton Park Swim Club in Summerville, SC and James Island Town Hall in James Island, SC both received New Construction/Substantial Renovation Merit Awards. Because these projects were the result of team work and collaboration with clients, Liollio would like to extend sincere gratitude to Hampton County, SC, WestRock and The Town of James Island, SC, along with their project team partners.

The AIA South Atlantic Region is comprised of three state chapters: GA, NC and SC and is home to more than 5,500 members. Events surrounding the 2019 AIA SAR Annual Design Conference, themed the ASPIRE Experience, took place in Asheville, NC over the course of three days, April 14 to April 16. A new type of collaborative conference, ASPIRE brought together the design and construction community to share stories and influence designers to create a better future. Breaking the mold of the traditional event and taking full advantage of the location, AIA SAR utilized the architecture, community and surroundings of Asheville to create this immersive environment of inspiration and design celebration.

Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center’s fully renovated and expanded Emergency Department will be open to Veterans next week. This project more than tripled the square footage in their Emergency Department, adding nine new bays, an additional nurses station, a workroom for staff and privacy for our Veterans. Liollio is proud to have been part of the team on this important , helping the VA to expand access to care for Veterans in their new space.

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - For the first time, Roper St. Francis is expanding its medical reach to Berkeley County.
On Friday, the healthcare provider is opening its new medical office building in Summerville. Until now, they only had an urgent care center in the area.
The grand opening event is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday. The offices are at 300 Callen Boulevard in Summerville behind all the major construction right near where 176 meets 17-A. Those who stop by can tour the building, grab some free food, and even pop in to a free health fair.
This state-of-the-art, three-story building will house a variety of specialists, including breast surgeons, orthopedic surgeons and OB/GYN physicians. Medical services here will range from dermatology to cardiology.
Jennifer Crawford will be the Chief Nursing Officer at the future Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital. She says this new medical office building was designed with the patients in mind.
"We've looked at all the attributes down to the color scheme matching the natural environment, because there’s proof that’s therapeutic in the healing process,” Crawford said. “We’ve added three elevators. One at every proximity to the building, so there's no long walking distances."
The medical offices are set to start seeing patients on Monday, Dec. 10. The healthcare provider is also building a hospital next door which is set to open in October 2019.

AIA South Carolina is pleased to announce Resilience by DESIGN: from the Blue Ridge to the Coast, its second biennial conference on Resiliency, to be held in downtown Greenville at the Clemson One space. This year's theme will emphasize the importance of Resilient planning across South Carolina and beyond coastal communities. Conference sessions will focus on Resilient Design issues affecting all regions in the state, including climate change adaptation, wild fires, tornadoes and other wind hazards.
Keynote speaker Laura Lesniewski, a Principal at BNIM, will discuss her firm's approach to "creating beautiful, integrated, living environments that inspire change and enhance the human condition." The 2011 AIA Firm Award winner, BNIM is a Kansas City based interdisciplinary practice that is shaping the national and global agenda for progressive planning, responsible architecture and design excellence.
We hope you'll join us for a one day "mini-conference" where members of the design and construction industry from across the state and region will gather, learn, and discuss the vital role they play in both the design and recovery of more Resilient Buildings and Communities.
