Liollio is excited to announce that Richland Library Ballentine received an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Charleston Merit Award for New Construction at the 2022 AIA Charleston Design + Service Awards last month. Congratulations to our clients and friends at Richland Library!

Richland Library Ballentine is a suburban public library that creates a wooded escape to support an active local community of artists and craftspeople. The library provides a connection to the outdoors that includes an artist’s corner for quiet, meditative work surrounded by nature. The central public space is seen as a living room, a linear space which is oriented away from civilization and culminates in a framed view of an undeveloped woodscape. The living room is punctuated by three public art works, including a wisteria tree which drapes playfully over a children’s reading area, crocheted by library patrons.

Liollio Architecture is honored to announce that the American Institute of Architects has recognized Liollio’s design of the Hampton County Health Clinic in Varnville, SC with a 2020 AIA National Healthcare Design Award.

“This project brings dignity, hope, and joy to the community it supports.”
— Jury comment

This facility serving two rural South Carolina communities reflects the region’s faith in its future. The new facility, a joint venture between county and state agencies, replaced an outdated, 50-year-old structure. Given the site’s location in a former railroad town, simple materials and massing were employed to evoke the boxcars that used to roll through. Inside, patient care areas are divided between clinical care and care for women, infants, and children. Each features its own service corridor and waiting areas, all with ample natural light that enhances the environment for patients facing potentially difficult diagnoses. Privacy was a key factor in determining the program and organization of the clinic’s spaces. At the new facility’s ribbon cutting ceremony, the team noted a shift in perception and mood, confirming it had delivered a modest but noble clinic reflective of the community’s emboldened spirit.

“Functional and understated, it is a fantastic little jewel box made of simple forms and modest materials...It is wonderful to see such thoughtful care and attention given to a rural community health facility. It is a building they can take pride in.”
— Jury comment

Liollio Architecture’s Sarah Glass Awarded South Atlantic Region AIA Design Award

Mez Joseph

Liollio's Sarah Glass, Associate AIA, was recognized for design excellence at the 2016 South Atlantic Region (SAR) AIA Design Awards Gala in Savannah GA. A native of Charleston SC and a graduate of Clemson University, Sarah returned to Charleston in May after receiving her Masters Degree in Architecture to join Liollio as Project Designer. Sarah and collaborator, Beth Koeppel, Associate AIA, who is currently with Kaas Wilson Architects in Minneapolis MN, were presented with a Merit Design Award for Changing Perspectives, a new campus master plan for South Carolina State University in Orangeburg SC. South Carolina State is looking for bold ways to revitalize a campus that will equip students with the tools, support and environment they need to succeed. This project looks at a new student center in the core of campus as the first step in the process to give order to the campus master plan, offer access to the newest technologies and provide a place to meet, gather and learn. This open and transparent building will change perspectives as South Carolina State’s presence continues to grow in the south.

Liollio Architecture was well represented by an enthusiastic contingent and garnered two design awards as well, one for St. Helena Library in St. Helena Island SC, and the other for the preservation to the U.S. Custom House in Charleston SC.

Congratulations to Sarah Glass, Beth Koeppel and all the honorees for their outstanding work!
