For 20 years, the Charleston Regional Business Journal has honored 40 individuals under 40 years old for their professional engagement and community service in the Charleston area. This year's list of recipients has been announced and we are pleased to learn that our own Aaron Bowman, AIA, LEED AP has been honored with an award! Liollio Architecture hosted students and mentors from the St. John’s High School ACE Program at our office on Tuesday. The students spent the morning getting a first-hand look into the day to day workings of an architecture office. They participated in a project-based learning exercise that guided them through sketching three dimensional objects in plan, section and elevation. They then continued work on their semester project to design a new wrestling facility for their school. Thank you to everyone involved for it a fun and memorable day!
Liollio is pleased to announce the elevation of Jennifer Charzewski, AIA, LEED AP, to Principal. As part of Liollio Architecture’s third generation of ownership, Jennifer promotes both the well-being of our design studio and the communities that we serve. Jennifer believes that architecture is about people, and designing places to gather, learn, work, and play is an opportunity to celebrate the pride and the story of a community. “ Liollio Architecture is a family, in every sense of the word, and the talent, enthusiasm, and commitment of our team makes our work a joy.”
A graduate of Texas A&M University and the University of Minnesota, Jennifer is a past President of AIA Charleston, a member of the AIA South Carolina Disaster Assistance Committee, a volunteer with ACE Mentors of Charleston and is currently working with an AIA South Carolina group to establish a committee for Equity in Architecture in South Carolina.
Jennifer has been part of the Liollio team for nine years and her design leadership spans from the award-winning St. Helena Library at Penn Center, Rock Hill’s Main Street Children’s Museum and Charleston International Airport to current projects including Richland Libraries, Charleston Fire Station #11 in West Ashley, James Island Town Hall, SCPRT State Welcome Centers, Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry and College of Charleston Simons Center for the Arts.
Liollio Architecture is proud to announce that Principal Dinos Liollio has been elected to the 2017 College of Fellows for the American Institute of Architects. AIA Fellows are recognized with the AIA’s highest membership honor for their exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society. The judging is rigorous, with approximately three percent of the AIA’s 88,000+ members having this distinction. There are multiple categories upon which a candidate might be considered. With nearly 100 awards, Dinos is recognized for his contribution to the design environment. We would like to congratulate Dinos and all of this year's recipients. Visit the AIA National website here.
ACE Mentors is a National Mentoring Program that mentors high school kids in (A) Architecture, (C)Construction and (E) Engineering. This is the Charleston SC Chapter. Liollio's Mary Tran, an ACE Charleston Mentor, participated in the event, giving students a better understanding of elevations. She can be seen in the video at 2:10. Liollio Principal Dinos Liollio, FAIA, will be the guest speaker on May 17th at this year's ACE Charleston Banquet. He will speak about his life experiences and journey.

How long have you lived in Charleston?
4 years (8 if you count the first 4 years of my life)
Where did you grow up?
Everywhere. My father was in the military, so we moved every three or 4 years.
What area of town do you live in?
Mount Pleasant
Are you married?
Yes
Do you have children?
We have one on the way.
What is the hardest part about being a mom/dad?
So far, the hardest part is the anticipation.
What is the greatest part about being a mom/dad?
I don’t know yet, let’s come back to this in April.
What is your favorite thing(s) in your house?
My watch collection and my antique drafting table.
What are the top three things you like to do in your free time?
Ahh, I get it, that is a joke right? What is free time?
Do you have any pets? If so, tell us a bit about them.
We have a puppy named Kuzu (it means lamb in Turkish) She is a head strong Aussie-Doodle.

What building have you visited that most impressed you?
Actually the spaces between inspire me more than buildings themselves.
What architect or architecture firm most inspires you?
This is constantly changing for me, every time I go to the Archdaily web site I see something new that inspires me. To lock myself into one single Architect or architecture firm, when there is so much good work out there would be a shame.
What architect or architecture firm most influenced you as a student?
Renzo Piano, Kisho Kurokawa, Tadao Ando, Marcel Breuer, Buckminster Fuller, Achille Castiglioni, Eero Saarinen, Philip Johnson, etc., etc.

I am currently reading Notes From the Internet Apocalypse, by Wayne Gladstone. Nothing on my radar to read after this, but I am always open to suggestions.

I really liked Grendel by John Gardner. It retells the epic of Beowulf from the point of the antagonist. It is a good reminder that all stories have more than one side to them.

What is the proudest moment of your life, thus far?
This is a tough one, because I am pretty hard on myself. I try not to dwell or get stuck on any one moment in life. I am proud of my accomplishments; each one sends me headed toward the next and keeps me going.

Liollio Architecture is proud to congratulate David Dewees, Associate AIA, for receiving his NCIDQ Certification, the standard certification for professional interior designers. Qualified individuals must be approved to take the exam, and the candidate must successfully pass each section within a specific timeframe. The exam is continually updated to ensure it aligns with the most current professional knowledge necessary to design spaces that are innovative, functional and safe. The Liollio team celebrates David and his hard-earned achievement.
A native Charlestonian and Liollio team member for over four years, David brings an extensive background in design, fine art and construction to Liollio. Our Liollio family gathered together last night for our 2016 Holiday Party in Mount Pleasant. We had a great time, eating, drinking, laughing, exchanging gifts and celebrating the season together. Thank you to all who attended and made the evening a special one. Cheers to those who couldn't be with us - you were truly missed!
Last Wednesday we said farewell to Movember 2016 by gathering together for a group photo of the Liollio men, with their mo's and beards in full glory. The ladies showed their support once again by donning snazzy mustaches and photobombing the men's photo shoot.
Liollio would like to thank everyone who participated in helping us raise awareness and funds for a great cause. The Movember Foundation helps prevent men from dying too young. Money raised for the charity funds research for prostate and testicular cancer, mental health issues, suicide prevention and more. We had a very successful year and nearly reached our goal. If you would like to donate, you can still access our fundraising link and learn more about the Movember Foundation at mobro.co/liollio. Until next Movember, thank you!
